MY FAVORITE HIKING SPOTS AROUND MALAGA

Malaga, located in the south Spain, in Andalusia, stands out for its magnificent coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. However, not only the sea attracts the attention of travelers, but also its wonderful mountains full of endless routes for hiking. The best thing is that the routes are suitable for all audiences, since there are different degrees of difficulty. In this way, you can explore them even with kids.

The mountains in southern Spain are called the Beatic System. They are born near Gibraltar and continue until Cabo Nao in Alicante, and even continue under the sea until Mallorca. The Beatic System appeared during the Tertiary Era due to the Alpine-Himalayan orogeny, caused by the collision of the tectonic plates, the African and the European., so these mountains are quite young and tall.

If you have more time, take a look at my article about Malaga, in it I explain some areas of hiking close to the city, and also some cultural places that you should visit.

LET’S START HIKING!

EAST PART OF MALAGA PROVINCE

LA MAROMA PEAK

In the Natural Park of Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama there is one of the highest peaks in the area, La Maroma, 2069 meters high. There are four main routes to the top: through El Robledal, Canillas del Aceituno, Sedella and Alcaucin. I consider the Robledal route as easier to climb, and it is also very beautiful since the path begins in a small oak forest, hence its name. In this place there is also the free camping area, in case you would like to spend a night surrounded by nature.

On the other hand, from Canillas de Aceituno the route goes up a path with truly incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, a magnificent walkway has been built in the town, a suspension bridge between mountains. Do not miss it!

EL CISNE PEAK

Also in the east side, in the same Natural Park of Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, there is a picturesque town, called Acebuchal that was depopulated in 1949, due to the high resistance of its inhabitants, the Maquis, against the Franco regime. At present this town has been restored and the abandoned houses have become the ideal place for rural tourism, frequented by both Spanish and northern Europeans who seek to rest in a peaceful. During the festivities of San Juan, celebrations with dances, local food and religious processions are organized in the town. It’s great excuse to visit the area then.

Among the most important peaks to conquer in this area, El Cisne Peak (the Swan Peak) stands out. The route that leads to it is difficult, due to its enormous unevenness. The top is divided among three very steep peaks, with magnificent views of other mountains, such as La Maroma and also the Mediterranean Sea.

WEST PART OF MALAGA PROVINCE

LOBO VIEWPOINT

It is one of my favorite areas for a morning hiking. The routes to the Mirador del Lobo (Wolf Viewpoint) leave from several towns, highlighting Torremolinos. They are all of short duration of about 2.5 – 3 hours, their difficulty is medium and the trails are well signposted. On the other hand, if you don’t feel like walking too much, I invite you to take the chairlift from Benalmádena. From above you will have the opportunity to contemplate the coastal towns, as well as the inland area of Malaga Province. By the way, it is a favorite tourist place for many travelers, due to its wonderful beaches, the leisure offer, and the mild Mediterranean climate.

INTERIOR PART OF MALAGA PROVINCE

TORRECILLA PEAK

One of the most popular places in Sierra de las Nieves is Torrecilla Peak. It is highly recommended to climb there during the winter months, when the mountains are covered with snow, creating a dreamlike landscape. The route begins in the Recreational Area of Los Quejigales, located in a very short distance from the beautiful town of Ronda, although you can also get there directly from Malaga, if you leave early. The hike is medium-difficult. However, in the lower part there are several trails to do with children. Also there is a picnic area with wooden benches and tables. It is a really pleasant place to enjoy nature.

Sierra de las Nieves is the area of the highest mountains in western Andalusia. Its mountains are formed by sedimentary, limestone and lean rocks, as well as dolomites, characteristic for their whitish color. Also magnificent native pines, the Pinsapos, are found only in this part of Spain.

In Pinsapos forest

HACHO MOUNT

Morning views in Alora

In the interior of the province of Malaga, the town of Alora is located, which boasts a wonderful castle, whose foundations recall the Phoenician colonization. Next to the town there is the Hacho Mount, from which it is possible to appreciate the beautiful landscape. The path to the Hacho Mount begins in town, it’s short and easy to follow. I remember that when I went up, I met an older man, the inhabitant of the town, who climbs the mountain twice a day. Maybe when you come to climb it, you will meet him at the top, at the Cruz Viewpoint…

TIPS:

  • Another interesting hiking spot is Torcal of Antequera.
  • Bring the adequate shoes and clothes, some of the routes has a difficult level.
  • In summer bring lots of water and in winter can be really cold. The best seasons to come are spring and autumn.
  • Never throw cigarette butts, the risk of fire is really high.
