The island of São Miguel, part of the Azores and belonging to Portugal, is often referred to as the “Garden of the Atlantic.” This magical corner captivates with its natural beauty, rich history, and unique atmosphere. From volcanic lakes to black sand beaches, each corner is a unique gem.

Discovered in the 15th century, São Miguel flourished in the 18th century with the tobacco industry and orange exports. Despite challenges such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, it has cultivated a unique identity by blending European and local influences.

Exploring São Miguel is a remarkably satisfying experience, from the Sete Cidades lagoons to the impressive cliffs. Wandering through the trails and immersing myself in the natural beauty has provided a unique sense of connection to the surroundings. The authenticity of coastal villages adds a special touch to this experience, allowing me to delve even deeper into local life. Here are some of my favorite places.

Lagoa das Sete Cidades is a two-colored lagoon located in a volcanic caldera. Divided by a narrow isthmus, it displays contrasting blue and green hues against the surrounding hills and vegetation. This surreal landscape, wrapped in local myths, offers viewpoints like Mirador da Vista do Rei for breathtaking panoramic views. In addition to its beauty, it is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and provides a peaceful place to connect with nature.

Lagoa do Fogo is a stunning lake nestled in a volcanic caldera. Surrounded by lush vegetation and mountainous landscapes, the crystal-clear lake exhibits tranquility. Its name, translating to “Lake of Fire,” evokes the volcanic energy that defines the island. Accessing the lake involves hiking through routes that offer panoramic views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.

Caldera das Furnas is a volcanic enclave characterized by fumaroles and natural hot springs. In this place, geothermal activity manifests palpably, creating a surreal landscape with steam columns emerging from the ground. The hot springs are utilized to cook the traditional “Cozido das Furnas,” a stew buried and cooked with the natural heat of the volcanic soil.

Fajã de Santo Cristo is an elevated coastal platform formed by volcanic material, housing a saltwater lagoon that blends with the Atlantic Ocean. This remote location is known to be a sanctuary for surfers, as its challenging waves attract surfing enthusiasts from around the world.

Ribeira dos Caldeirões is a charming natural corner with lush vegetation and captivating waterfalls. Surrounded by dense fern forests, this place offers a serene atmosphere perfect for contemplation. Well-signposted trails invite visitors to explore the unique beauty of this landscape.

The Litoral Norte is a coastal stretch that dazzles with its natural beauty and stunning marine landscapes. Along this picturesque coast, cliffs rise majestically above the Atlantic Ocean, offering spectacular panoramic views. The crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic wash the black sand beaches, creating a striking contrast with the lush greenery of the surrounding fields. Traditional fishing villages dot the coastline, providing visitors with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the authenticity of island life.

Ponta Delgada, the picturesque capital of São Miguel, is a city that blends historical charm with a lively cultural scene. In the heart of the city lies the Matriz Church of São Sebastião, an architectural gem from the 16th century with an impressive facade and interior details that narrate the island’s history. Nearby, the City Gate (Portas da Cidade) marks the historic entrance to Ponta Delgada, offering an opportunity to delve into the past. While exploring Ponta Delgada, a visit to the Mercado da Graça is a must. This market, located in the historic center, is a feast for the senses. Here, stalls overflow with local products such as fresh fish and seafood, artisanal cheeses, cured meats, fruits, and vegetables. The market provides an authentic glimpse into local life and an opportunity to taste the unique flavors of the region.

Relax in the thermal waters: Poça da Dona Beija, in Furnas, São Miguel, offers a rejuvenating experience. The thermal pools, fed by geothermal sources, provide temperatures between 35°C and 39°C, creating a serene and therapeutic environment. Surrounded by lush gardens, these thermal waters are known for their beneficial properties for the skin and overall relaxation. With gentle waterfalls and areas for groups, Poça da Dona Beija offers a unique getaway in the stunning natural surroundings of the Azores.

Local cuisine: Sample the delicious local cuisine. Don’t miss traditional dishes like “Cozido das Furnas,” and visit the Mercado da Graça in Ponta Delgada to enjoy fresh and authentic products.
